Honouring Service, Supporting People: What Remembrance Day Means for Us

Remembrance

As Remembrance Day comes around again, many of us take a quiet moment to think about the people who have served and those who are still serving today. Their stories, their sacrifices, and their families are never far from our minds.

For those of us operating and working in defence and security, Remembrance Day feels particularly close to home. Having come from a Military family myself, I am proud to be a part of Talent Locker who are signatories of the Armed Forces Covenant and we see remembrance not as a date on the calendar, but as a reminder of our ongoing responsibility to the Armed Forces community all year round.

At it’s heart, that is what today is about. Honouring service by supporting people not just whilst they are in uniform, but by supporting their families and their careers and lives they go on to build afterwards too.

Veterans bring strength

If you’ve ever worked alongside someone from the Military, you’ll know that they bring something unique. Not in a buzzword way, but in the way they show up every single day.

  • Veterans stay calm when things are moving fast
  • They focus on the mission, not the noise around it
  • Working as a team is an involuntary response for them, even when things get tough
  • Always able to step up and lead when it matters the most

These are things you cannot always teach. They are lived.

And they are exactly the things defence organisations, and honestly any organisation, genuinely need.

But transitioning out of the military isn’t always easy and can be extremely hard. The challenge isn’t that the military leaver isn’t ready. It’s more often than not because workplaces aren’t able to recognise the skills and talent in front of them. That’s where we come in and why this matters to us.

Remembrance is more than reflection — it’s action.

Every year, Remembrance Day reminds us to pause. But it also reminds us to act.

  • To keep improving how we support people coming out of service.
  • To keep challenging how organisations hire, train and develop veterans.
  • To keep creating workplaces where veterans do not just fit in, but thrive

Three things you can do TODAY

If you’re looking for ways to make your organisation more veteran-inclusive, here are a few simple places to start…

  • Review your hiring process. Check Job descriptions, interview language and support systems for onboarding veterans
  • Talk to the veterans in your organisation. Ask how their experience compares to their expectations and what could have been improved.
  • Mark Remembrance Day at work. Encourage all employees to stop and take a moment of reflection.
